Tips for Travelling with Kids

New places and experiences are fascinating for children - once you get there!

Long hours of driving, flying and waiting can take their toll on even the most resourceful of families. When the excitement of looking out the window comes to an end, you'll be glad to have a well-stocked arsenal of travel toys and activities.

What to put in your travel bag of tricks

Your guiding principle: Ideal travel toys are compact, easy to carry and silent. Be sure to include a mixture of new activities and old favourites in your travel bag of tricks.

    • Do take along a favourite "stuffy" or "blankie" to help kids feel comfortable in new and strange places
    • Do make one bag for each child. They will be thrilled to have their own bag to carry.
    • Do take a flashlight to help kids orient themselves in dark, strange hotel rooms
    • Don't take along toys with many small parts that can be lost
    • Do take toys that get used in multiple ways. They will give you much more play value for the space they take up
    • Don't take along battery operated toys unless the sound can be turned off and you have a good supply of batteries

If you travel frequently, consider putting your travel kit away when you return home and saving it for the next trip. Each trip, you can add one new item to keep it exciting. Be sure to check out our Travel Toys and Activities for more ideas.
